We are often harshest to those who depend on us completely. An elderly pet can't run from a neglectful owner, and a person with no job, savings, or family endures bad behavior silently. The powerless have no other place to turn.
When someone has nowhere else to go, the cruel person feels safe because there will be no consequences. The victim stays because leaving means hunger, homelessness, or utter isolation. So they accept small cruelties every day just to survive.
This happens in homes, care facilities, and bad relationships. We have all done it in small ways, like getting impatient with a lonely friend or a dependent partner. We raise our voice because we know they will still come back.
If you notice someone has nowhere else to go, that is the moment to be gentle. Your kindness means everything because you are all they have left. Choose to be their safety, not their wound.
